Assignment 1 “How will the iPad change Education?” by Rob Reynolds
In this article Rob Reynolds discusses the benefits of the iPad as a tool for 21st Century Learning. Using the iPad to provide students with textbook subscription would be a great use for the iPad. Our school has gotten digital copies of books to go along with the traditional text and the students seem to really like them. If they included more multimedia content it will engage students much more than the traditional textbook. Reynolds, R. (2011, January 27). How will the iPad change education? « PBS TeacherLine Blog. “Measuring the iPad's Potential for Education” by Bridget McCrea
The article shows how much “Digital Natives” expect from new technology when Catherine Nothstein a ninth grader was disappointed when the original iPad did not have a camera. Most teachers are very impressed with all the things the iPad can do. Because students already have the technology it is important that as Barbara Wippich stated “…the education field starts to embrace it and use it…” It would be great to have iPads available for every student, as they would be much more portable than even laptops, but current budget constraints will make this very difficult.

“iPads Take a Place Next to Crayons in Kindergarten”
This article talks about how one school in Maine giving iPads to 300 kindergarten students is ...supplementing crayons, finger paints and flashcards with iPads…” This has supporters eager to see the results, but critics are concerned the money is wasted on students who do not understand the cost. Teachers see the value is bring a tool to students that will get them engaged in learning. Opponents feel the cost is not worth the expense for students that are only 5 years old.
“58 Interesting Ways to use an iPad in the Classroom.”
This site is a slide show that gives explanations and often the iTunes links to great resources to use in the classroom. There are apps for students in all levels of school and many teacher resources. They cover many different topics including digital storytelling, math, collaboration, mind mapping and many more. It was a great resource just to try and get ideas about what is available as you get started using the iPad.

“50 really useful iPad 2 tips and tricks”
This could be used as a great reference guide for new iPad users. Although many students do not like to read manuals on how to use a new piece of technology, this could be a great way to look up the answers to the quick questions you may have. Examples include taking screen shots and turning on CAPS LOCK.

Accounting Equation Lite (free) This app will be great for students in a first year accounting class. The student puts the numbers into the simple accounting equation and if the equation does not balance it cannot be added. After the transactions are all added in, color coding shows the students how each transaction effects the financial statements.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/accounting-terms/id406337801?mt=8 Accounting Terms (free) This app will be a great way for students to study many of the terms we use in accounting. They can create a list of favorites that are being covered in a chapter or all terms for the year. For a fee of $2.99 it can be upgraded to include most accounting terms, but the free version has most that we use in first year accounting.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/balance-sheet-and-cashflows/id414316870?mt=8 Cash Flows and Balance Sheet (free) allows you to pick a profession and then play the board game. In the game you track your cash, income, expenses and liabilities. The goal is to become financially free- your passive income is greater than your total expenses. Students in my classes enjoy these type of games so much more that the old paper and pencil simulations we did in the past.
Digital Media/Marketing Apps http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/videolicious/id400853498?mt=8 Videolicious (free) allows you take unedited video clips and photos and turn them into edited videos in just three steps. You will choose the videos and photos, film yourself talking about the videos and photos in your movie, and finally choose your music. Videolicious then creates your video. There are some pointers on what to include in your video depending on what you are creating.
iMotion (free) allows you to make time-lapse and stop motion movies. We have used Movie Maker in the past to do this, but with and iPad or iPod, this can be done on one devise. I created one very short movie and it was much easier to manipulate than Movie Maker. There is a full version ($0.99) that allows for direct YouTube upload and other exporting features, but I did not use this version.
Garageband ($4.99) is a great way to put music into student movies in digital media. I have had students use this in the past and they love it. This will allow them a much easier way to bring original music into their movies.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/digital-publishing-suite-tips/id436199090?mt=8 DPS Tips (Free) Easy to follow tutorials it says to make iPad apps, but after watching the tutorial, it gives a good explanation of the program. InDesign. It will help my Digital media create animation and Marketing students to create Logos using InDesign. It’s a great program to use, but we do not have the time in class to show every aspect of the program and with these tutorials students can look at the topics they need to complete a project. Information Literacy Apps
QuickCite ($0.99) scan your books bar code and it turns it sends a citation for the book to your email. The citation styles you can choose from are APA, MLA, Chicago, or IEEE styles. In my classes we use BibMe, but this makes it even easier for the students.
Easy Money Planner (Free) In personal finance I am always trying to show students how they will earn interest on saving/investment accounts or pay interest on loans/credit cards, this app allows them to easily get these answers. They do not have to use the complicated financial calculators to get the results, just plug in the answers to very simple questions and the results is there in the touch of a button.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/financial-football-hd/id387095643?mt=8 Financial Football (free)is a great app to review financial literacy topics. You choose a team and then compete head to head answering financial literacy topics. I used this as review before the final exam and the kids really enjoyed playing the game and unlike some of the other review games I have used the most students participated.
Assignment 4 Audiobooks/E-Books
Educational Book I will use this book in my Digital Media class as a handbook for creating videos using Movie Maker.

Assignment 5
Podcast/Vodcasts America’s Marketing High School podcasts look at many different areas of marketing with a curriculum aligned with the National Marketing Standards. The podcast gives students a great look into current marketing themes including the Super Bowl, MLB playoffs and Summer Movies. Each podcast also come with a downloadable teacher’s guide that includes a worksheet.
The Podcasts that I would be most interested in using would be the ones that deal with social media. I currently teach a Marketing class with and the textbooks has a copyright of 2002 and it has no coverage of Social Media Marketing and very little on E-marketing. I think the topics from the Podcast would bring more information on these topics to the classroom. When using them in the classroom, I would use them to accompany other materials because I think students may get bored just listening to the straight through for the entire 10 – 20 minute time frame. http://itunes.apple.com/tr/itunes-u/americas-marketing-high-school/id439714922

“Enter the iPad (or Not?)”
This article starts by taking about all the hype that surrounded launch of the iPad and then went in to the debate on the iPad as an educational tool. As many schools are launching pilot programs, a battle begins to see how schools will spend their limited technology funds: iPad, netbook or laptop. One of the biggest challenges is how the iPad will integrate with the existing computer network. Many see it as one piece of the technology that schools will offer students.
